About Us

What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.

How It Started

Hello, I’m Dotti Bailey DSW, LICSW, PIP; the founder and owner of Bailey Wellness Group. I would like to share a little about myself and my approach to Trauma Therapy.

A combination of life experiences and a desire to help others led me to the human services field. Just out of high school, I started working at a local health care facility and decided to apply for nursing school. I had the academic ability for nursing but not the tough stomach. After multiple attempts to overcome a weak stomach, I decided nursing was not the path for me.

I gained extensive experience and knowledge through both non-profit and for-profit industries before returning to school. I obtained a Bachelor’s of Social Work (BSW) from the University of Montevallo, a Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Alabama, and most recently completed the Doctorate program at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, for Doctor of Social Work (DSW).

For the last five years, I provided trauma therapy exclusively to children and adolescents utilizing a variety of evidence-based, trauma-focused, trauma-informed approaches. Trauma focused therapy promotes resiliency and healing from the impacts of trauma and reduces symptoms of trauma, behavioral disorders, anxiety and depression. Trauma focused therapy offers positive conflict resolution methods, healthy expressions of feelings and emotions, as well coping methods and skills to navigate through life’s challenges.

What Is Trauma Therapy for Children, Adolescents, & Teens

For the past 23 years I have lived, served and worked in communities filled with people significantly impacted by trauma and often a lifetime of trauma. Many people experience trauma but the effects of trauma vary widely based on many factors. Trauma can impact every area of a person’s life including physically and emotionally. Trauma symptoms may hinder relationships with family and friends, create deficits in educational and other social settings. Trauma may lead to financial challenges and/or may impact a person’s ability to attend school, remain employed, enjoy hobbies, care for themselves, and complete basic activities needed for daily living. Left untreated, the wounds, emotional scars, hurt, and pain can be as crippling as physical injuries. The more I researched trauma, short-term and long-term effects of trauma, and the way our bodies and brains process and respond to trauma and stressors, the more I knew it would be the area of focus for me. Poor mental health continues to be a growing problem not only for adults, but children and adolescents as well. Reports show over the last three years, anxiety, depression, and behavioral disorder rates have more than doubled in adolescents and teens. Additionally, suicide, self-harm, and drug overdose are all significantly higher over previous years.

Trauma-focused therapy is a clinical approach that recognizes and emphasizes understanding how the traumatic experience impacts a child’s mental, behavioral, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. Trauma-focused therapy addresses the needs of children who have experienced trauma or abuse by understanding the connection between the trauma experience and the child’s emotional and behavioral responses. The purpose of trauma-focused therapy is to offer skills and strategies to assist your child in better understanding, coping with and processing emotions and memories tied to traumatic experiences. Trauma focused therapy helps children create a healthier and more adaptive meaning of the experience that took place in their life.

Multi-Dimensional Individualized Approach

Stigma surrounding mental illness continues to be a barrier for those seeking support and services. My own journey and watching others on their journey to wellness only deepens and strengths my desire to raise awareness of the harmful effects of stigma for those living with mental health conditions.

There are many highly educated, knowledgeable and experienced clinicians in this field. I am honored to have been mentored by some of the best! I have learned through years of work, no two people are the same, no two situations are exactly the same, and there isn’t a one-size fits all quick fix for mental health disorders and trauma.

I offer a multi-dimensional, holistic and individualized approach of trauma-focused services and treatments in a safe, supportive child and adolescent friendly environment

What To Expect

There are many reasons you or someone you may know may be considering trauma therapy services. My approaches and interventions used provide a framework of supporting individual goals, whether identified immediately or further along in the therapeutic process. Common goals of child and adolescent counseling vary depending on the child’s age, symptoms, and other factors. Generally, child and adolescent counseling addresses issues in their life that are significantly impacting their growth, development, mental health, and overall well-being. Goals for child counseling may include offering age-appropriate tools, skills, techniques, and methods to help them navigate life’s challenges. While each person’s goals and reasons for therapy may vary greatly, my goal is to offer therapeutic services in a safe and supportive environment utilizing a trauma-informed trauma-focused approach.

A trauma-informed trauma-focused approach means being knowledgeable about trauma and avoiding re-traumatization by helping children, adolescents, and teens interpret trauma in a way they are able to process and understand. When a child’s trauma symptoms and emotional distress are left untreated, the negative impacts can be devastating and long-lasting. Through early intervention, we are able to foster good mental and physical health by helping children heal and recover from trauma

Making A Difference

I live in our community, my husband and I have three grown daughters, and am fur-mom to two very sweet and spoiled King Charles Cavaliers. I have three amazing grandchildren who call me by my favorite name, GaGa.

I practice yoga regularly and enjoy teaching children’s yoga, reading, listening to music, books, and podcasts. I am a Registered Yoga Teacher and Registered Child Yoga Teacher through Yoga Alliance.

I believe everyone deserves access to quality, professional, and compassionate mental health services. I hope to make a difference in our community by offering safe and supportive spaces for children and adolescents to receive professional and specialized mental health services. My advocacy efforts for the de-stigmatization of mental health includes ongoing support, empowerment, and advocacy for the most vulnerable among us, our children.

The ancient proverb, “it takes a village” suggests communities of people working together to provide positive and meaningful engagement opportunities for children and adolescents. The village offers children, families and caregivers support in a variety of ways.

At Bailey Wellness, we want to do our part in “your village”. We are dedicated to providing safe supportive spaces and trauma-focused services for children, adolescents, and teens who are struggling.

Everyone is welcome at Bailey Wellness. LGBTQIA+ friendly and transgender safe space.
